How the list gets filled

  1. From memory first — everyone (kids and grown-ups) names their books before anyone opens a shelf. The ones recalled unprompted are the real ones.
  2. Interview the kids — favourite scenes, verbatim, from memory. Record the exact words; they're better than any review.
  3. Photograph the survivors — the physical copies, especially the battered, loved ones. Note the lost books worth re-buying.
  4. Mark the inheritance shelf — which books wait for the next child, and at what age to hand them over.
